An Overview of Industrial
Labeling Systems
Industrial labeling equipment comes in a wide variety of sizes, speeds and configurations. Here are some of the different types of production labeling machines and brief descriptions of their intended application(s):
Top Labelers Top Labeling machines are comparatively simple designs that can be set up for either semi- or fully-automatic operation. The unit positions a label on each product as it passes below the labeling head. Frequently used for UPC box labels, they are generally intended for flat surfaces. The CVC 200 is an excellent, versatile top labeler.
Top/Bottom Labelers Top/Bottom labelers are similar to top labelers with the difference that there are two label heads and two control paths. The top and bottom labels can be vastly different from one another and can be independently positioned. The CVC 220 and other 200 series labelers are well suited for top/bottom labeling applications.
Front/Back Labelers As the name implies, a front/back labeler will label 1, 2 or even 3 sides of a product package. The CVC 400 series labelers are the best front/back labelers on the market. Labeling speed is automatically synchronized using CVC's patented SelfSet™ with conveyor speed to ensure accurate label positioning. The labeling head can be angled up to 20 degrees to conform to tapered container shapes.
Vertical Wraparound Labelers Labels can be wrapped on a bottle's complete circumference (full wrap) or partially across its face (semi wrap). Multiple labels can be applied by a single machine by adding applicator heads in the product path. The CVC 300 and CVC 302 are good examples of vertical wraparound labelers.
Horizontal Wraparound Labelers Normally used for irregularly-shaped items such as ampules, Items are placed on a conveyor or horizontal rollers which feed through a wrap station. The CVC 350 is a fine example of a Horizontal Ampule Labeler.
Multi/Combination Labelers Able to adapt to nearly any conceivable labeling requirements, the CVC 430 Front/Back/Wrap labeler is one of the most versatile and cost-effective labeling systems available anywhere — period. The SelfSet™ control system assures easy label setup, superior label placement accuracy and reliable operation.
Tamp or Blow-On Label Applicators Frequently used for individualized labeling. The print heads are placed adjacent to the product conveyor and can be configured for top, side or bottom applications. Applications include shipping or box labels, one-time promotional stickers and other labeling situations where extreme positioning accuracy is not required. The CVC 100 can be configured to serve as an outstanding Print/Apply labeler.
Print and Apply Labelers Frequently used for bottles, cartons, pharmaceutical products and other containers, CVC Print and Apply systems are available with Tamp or Loose Loop/Wipe-On applicators. They will print labels with or without barcodes using either Sato or Zebra OEM thermal transfer print engines. Since the print engine is mounted directly on the labeling head, the system can synchronize itself and print continuously while the labeler applies the labels at normal production speeds.
